Orange liqueur

Preparing homemade orange liqueur is a tried-and-true way to use seasonal citrus over the years. Drinking it makes you feel like you're in sunny Italy, even if it's gray and cold outside the window. The homemade liqueur has an exceptionally intense and natural orange flavor, and is ideal for serving at the end of a meal, as an accompaniment to desserts or as an ingredient in other cocktails.

Directions

1. Step

We start by preparing the oranges - they should be well washed and dried. Carefully grate the peel from the oranges - it is important not to grate the white, bitter layer. I recommend to grate the peel as thinly as possible with a vegetable peeler - it should be thin strips, without a trace of white flesh.

2. Step

Add the orange peel to a large jar, then pour in the spirit. Seal the jar tightly and set it aside in a dark, cool place for at least 2-4 weeks. Every now and then, it's a good idea to shake the jar so that the ingredients combine better.

3. Step

After this time, we prepare the sugar syrup. In a heavy-bottomed pot, we combine sugar and water and heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. We leave the syrup to cool.

4. Step

Then, the spirit with the oranges is strained through a strainer and then through a thick cheesecloth - we need a really clear liquid.

5. Step

We add the cooled syrup to the strained liquid, stir and put it into a bottle. We seal the bottle tightly.

6. Step

The finished liqueur should still stand for about 2 weeks, so that the ingredients can better combine and harmonize with each other. After this time the liqueur is ready for consumption!
